Zodiac Signs & Symbols Explained

I use many signs and symbols in my artwork to represent the elements, planets, constellations and more. Zodiac signs play a key roll in the symbolism I incorporate in my art. You’ll notice that almost all of my pieces have my sign–Libra. I’m a Libra through and through, from Sun sign to Rising sign. If you’re interested in finding your Sun and Rising sign you’ll have to know your birth date, place and exact time. (Side note: My Mom called my original doctor and was able to find this information, you can also request a long-form birth certificate with this info!)

List of Zodiac Signs & Symbols:

  • ♈ Aries — March 21 – April 19
  • ♉ Taurus — April 20 – May 20

  • ♓ Pisces — February 19 – March 20

In the above list, I’m using dates from Astrostyle, these might differ slightly depending on what site you reference. Let’s dive deeper into each of these symbols and what they represent:

♈ Aries

A sign ruled by fire, the “V” shaped symbol represents the horns of a Ram. Aries are active, passionate, and not afraid to go head first into a situation.

♉ Taurus

A sign grounded in the earth, the Taurus symbol represents the head and horns of a Bull. Although patient and calm, the bull has a temper usually awakened by sudden change.

♊ Gemini

A sign ruled by the element of air, Geminis represent duality, thus the symbol of the twins. Because a Gemini is so adaptable, if not inconsistent, you might feel like you are talking to two different people at times.

♋ Cancer

A sign governed by water, Cancer is represented by the two claws of the Crab. As self-preservationists, Cancers are highly emotional and protective, especially when it comes to their committed relationships.

♌ Leo

A sign ruled by the element of fire, Leo symbolized the mane of the Lion. As natural-born leaders, noble Leos will be passionate and take control of situations with long-term commitment.

♍ Virgo

A sign governed by the earth, the Virgo symbol represents the virgin, or Maiden, with the loop closed representing the purity of this Zodiac’s intentions. Loyal and hardworking, Virgos are detail-oriented, viewing life with a larger perspective to help the greater good.

♎ Libra

An air sign, the Libra symbol showcases the scales or the setting sun (an in-between time of day or night), the only symbol of the zodiac that is inanimate. Always chasing balance and equilibrium, Libras will be approachable and try to cooperate at all costs due to a strong dislike of confrontation.

♏ Scorpio

A water sign, the Scorpio symbol represents the Scorpion’s stinger, or sexual organs as this sign is usually highly sexual and in-tuned with desire. Passionate and possessive, Scorpios can secretive and mysterious.

♐ Sagittarius

A fire sign, the arrow flies through the air with this Archer symbol. Usually off on their next adventure, a Sagittarius will be energetic, independent and direct.

♑ Capricorn

A solid earth sign, the Capricorn symbol represents the sea goat, the “V” is of the beard of the goat, and the tail is shown by the loop. A Capricorn will go through life steadily, building upon their own life experiences. Capricorns are usually self-disciplined and responsible, and at times very stubborn.

♒ Aquarius

In contrast to the ruling element of air, the Aquarius sign is represented by the Water Bearer. Highly intellectual, Aquarians are in-tuned with energy flowing in and out of their lives and usually take the road less followed.

♓ Pisces

A true form water sign, the Pisces symbol represents two fish swimming in polar directions. Social and empathetic, Pisces will be in-tuned with the cycle of life and might be able to walk between the two worlds of the physical-spiritual realms.

This is only a brief overview of each of the signs, I encourage you to explore other resources based on your Sun and Rising sign(s), and enjoy some of these symbols with greater understanding in my art: @BurntThistleCeramics
